Devlog 5: Final

Echo's Trial is finally ready for submission :D

Since the concept document was made, the scope has largely remained unchanged. I believe I achieved what I aimed for, though I would've liked a few things to be in the final version. I wanted to make use of area effectors for conveyor belts to launch the player across a big gap and make a large jump as a little platforming challenge, but ultimately this didn't get put in, although it never was officially in the scope. I also wish I had a handful more levels, as the game currently remains rather short, able to be finished in around 35 seconds give or take.

The addition of a 'speedrun' timer was made because I had played the game so much that I started seeing how fast I could complete it to test the end screens and UI buttons, so I thought I'd add it to the final game. Another thing that made it in was pressure plates, they functionally act the same as the levers, though they trigger on entering a 2D Box Collider and are able to be turned off upon re-entering the collider, making a platform go down as a player aims to jump to it, which I believe creates a fun little mechanic to be weary of.

Despite all of this, Echo's Trial has now got a solid prototype ready for submission. I did not partake in testing Echo's Trial due to work commitments, but I did get feedback on a bug in the Discord that was outlined in the previous devlog.

The full asset list for any particular scene includes:

  • The blue background
  • A Platforms Tilemap
  • A Background Tilemap (no collision)
  • The Player
  • The Player's Spawn Point
  • A Backtrack Prevention collider
  • A Fall Catch Collider
  • A SceneSwitch Collider
  • A Flippable Platform
  • A Lever
  • A Pressure Plate
  • A Spike Collider that functions the same as the Fall Catch Collider
  • Any EventManager systems relating to the Timer or Music.
  • and of course the camera ;p
